Hyperglycemia which is very commonly known as
'high blood sugar' is a condition of the health that occurs when the level of a
person's blood sugar goes up above the normal level. It is a condition
considered as alarming for health among both diabetics and non-diabetics people. Hyperglycemia
presents the possibility of diabetes among those not yet afflicted with the
disease and the risks of certain types of complications among people with
diabetes to begin with.
Hyperglycemia is in contrast to low blood
sugar, developing rapidly and randomly. High blood sugar is usually a slow
process and it takes hours or days before symptoms manifest. Some of the
earliest symptoms of this condition are thirst, fatigue, frequent urination and
dehydration. Left untreated, hyperglycemia damages blood vessels and in
the long run, eye, heart, nerve and kidney disease. Hyperglycemia is also
known to lead to comatose and in some serious cases, death.
Prevention is always better than cure. Treating
high sugar early can save your life, and therefore it is important that you
recognize their symptoms before it results in an emergency. If you suspect
that your blood sugar is above normal limits, it is best to measure your
glucose just to be safe. There are a number of things that you can do if the glucose
test confirms that your blood sugar is higher than normal.
The first important thing you can do is to drink plenty of water or caffeine and sugar-free drinks to counteract the effects of dehydration. Another thing you have to do is to continually monitor your blood sugar level and report the same to your doctor if it continues to be higher than normal. Your doctor can advise you on the next course of action - and possibly may adjust your medication or change them completely.
